Many people now use the Internet to keep in touch with friends, research a topic, shop, or find out the latest news.

But just as in real life, some people you run into online might try to take advantage.

Online chat rooms have a bad reputation. Because users can easily remain anonymous, chat rooms often attract people who are interested in more than just chatting. They'll sometimes ask visitors for information about themselves, their families, or where they live — information that shouldn't be given away.

Phishing is when scam artists send fake text, email, or pop-up messages to get you to share your personal and financial information. Criminals use the information to commit identity theft.
