Hiring Someone to Fix Your Home

{What to Know} {What to Do}

Whether you live in a house or condominium, there will be things that need repair. Sometimes, you may want to add a new floor or make other changes. If you canít do the work yourself, you will need to hire a home improvement contractor.

Itís not as simple as it sounds. Pick the wrong person, and you may pay more than the job is worth. Or you may end up with damage to your property. All kinds of problems may come up when you have work done to your home. That is why you should follow certain steps before you hire someone.

By law, all home improvement contractors and salespersons offering and doing work in Connecticut must be registered with the Department of Consumer Protection. That includes roofers, remodeling contractors, driveway pavers, and anyone who installs fences, flooring or windows, to name just a few.

Hiring a registered contractor is your strongest protection against financial damage or loss on a home improvement job. The stateís Home Improvement Guaranty Fund can provide up to $15,000 in financial restitution per contract, if something goes wrong in a job done by a registered contractor.

Never hire someone who comes to your door offering work. You are going to over pay, or pay for something that you donít need.
